1. Vision

HunterX will become the industry-standard open-source security operations platform that any organization — from a solo bug bounty hunter to an enterprise red team — can deploy to plan, orchestrate, execute, validate, correlate, and report complete security assessments. HunterX is the operating system for security testing: it does not replace the tools an operator already trusts; it unifies them under one intelligent, AI-driven command plane.

The platform is not measured by the number of scanners it wraps. It is measured by the quality of the decisions it enables: what to test, in what order, with what tool, with what confidence, and with what business risk.


2. Mission

To deliver a single, AI-driven security operating platform that plans, orchestrates, executes, validates, correlates, and reports end-to-end security assessments by integrating open-source security tools through a unified, extensible, and auditable architecture — without locking operators into a vendor toolchain.

The mission has four operational pillars:

  1. Orchestrate — Run complete, multi-phase assessments (reconnaissance → enumeration → detection → validation → exploitation support → reporting) as reproducible workflows, not one-off commands.
  2. Intelligently decide — Let an AI planner decide what to do next based on live evidence, target profile, mission profile, and risk posture; never blindly.
  3. Integrate without friction — Add any tool in a day using a documented SDK, a structured knowledge file, and a validated adapter contract.
  4. Prove everything — Every finding is a first-class, evidence-backed, versioned, and correlated data object, not a line of console text.

5. Non-Goals

The following are explicitly out of scope and must NOT be implemented in the core, as plugins, or as adapters without a ratified scope amendment:

Anything not listed as a goal, scope item, or explicit non-goal is subject to the Scope Amendment Process (see 24 - Quality Assurance.md) before implementation.

The platform ships twelve mission profiles. Each profile binds a workflow template, an objective model, a tool allow-list, an output contract, and a risk model. See 12 - Mission Profiles.md for the full definition.

7. Project Philosophy

The following principles are constitutionally binding for every module, plugin, and line of engineering work in HunterX. A change that violates a philosophy principle requires a ratified exception in 24 - Quality Assurance.md.

P-01 · Orchestrate, Don’t Rebuild

HunterX integrates battle-tested OSS tools. We add value through intelligence, orchestration, and correlation, not by re-scanning targets with homemade scanners.

P-02 · AI as an Operator, Not an Oracle

AI proposes, plans, triages, and drafts. It never silently executes destructive or scope-exceeding actions without human confirmation where the mission profile requires it. Every AI decision is recorded, versioned, and explainable.

P-03 · Evidence Is Truth

A finding without evidence is a hypothesis. A finding with evidence is data. Screenshots, raw responses, payloads, logs, and timestamps are first-class entities in the unified schema (08 - Unified Security Schema.md).

P-04 · Clean Architecture Above All

Dependency rule: inward dependencies only. The domain core has no knowledge of FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, Redis, or any tool binary. See 02 - Architecture.md and 04 - Coding Standards.md.

P-05 · Everything Is a Plugin

Tools, detectors, reporters, AI strategies, and mission behaviors are plugins. The core provides contracts; the ecosystem provides implementations.

P-06 · Fail Loud, Recover Gracefully

Every failure is captured, categorized, retried per policy, and surfaced. The system degrades gracefully when a tool or provider is unavailable and records the degradation in the audit trail.

HunterX enforces the engagement scope at every layer: planner, workflow, adapter, and sandbox. Scope violations abort the offending unit and escalate. See 13 - Security Standards.md.

P-08 · Privacy and Secrets by Design

Secrets never enter logs, reports, or AI prompts. Data at rest is encrypted; data in transit is TLS; secrets are isolated in a vault-backed secret store.

P-09 · Deterministic Where It Matters

Planning, tool invocation order, and report output are deterministic and reproducible. AI randomness is bounded and pinned by a seed per mission where required for reproducibility.

P-10 · Observability Is a Feature

Every action has a trace: correlation_id, span_id, actor, timestamps, inputs, outputs, and outcome. Telemetry and audit are not bolt-ons; they are core contracts.

P-11 · Longevity and Evolution

The core is stable; the ecosystem evolves. New tools, plugins, AI strategies, and mission types must be addable without changing the core (see 25 - Future Expansion.md).

P-12 · Security First, Always

HunterX is a security product; it must practice what it preaches. Sandboxing, least privilege, signed artifacts, and a hardened supply chain are non-negotiable.
